Do you stand with Colin Kaepernick? The San Francisco 49ers quarterback decided to remain seated for the national anthem during football games. He says it’s in protest over the United States’ treatment of people of color. His actions are creating a national conversation about patriotism, free speech and racism. It’s customary to stand during veterans’ songs at Native gatherings. Is it possible to honor those traditions and still remain critical of the United States? Are you ambivalent about honoring the Stars and Stripes?
Guests:
Marcus Chishchilly (Navajo) – retired marine
Kade Ferris (Turtle Mountain Chippewa) – one of the founders Unity USA
Break Music: Natural Anthem (song) Jesse Ed Davis (artist) Keep Me Comin’ (Bonus Tracks Version) (album)

Yes, I stand/sit with Colin, when we give respect we will receive respect!

I commend the guy. Like someone said, democracy is about being free to have your own voice, so learn how to respect the voice of contrary opinion. Just because it is not yours, doesn’t make it wrong. or vice versa.

Showing respect for a symbol of democracy, and in appreciation of the kind of life as Americans we have, and expect to have, is why I stand. It’s why thousands have died to protect our rights as citizens.. This man is as disrespectful to those who gave their lives and to the symbols we identify with (as citizens) as those who would burn the flag.. What he is projecting is disrespect… nothing more than that. Certainly there are race issues, gender issues, every kind of issue anyone wants to make, but choose your platform wisely without treading on symbols most of us are proud of. Perhaps if this man would put a little effort into thinking on how he can affect positive change he might come up with a idea that doesn’t involve being so disrespectful. Sad thing is that there may be many of our young people that look up to this guy. His message “Be disrespectful and you will be noticed”… What kind of message is that? Maybe giving some of his hard earned $ to homeless people of color would be a better message… but it is easier to sit and do nothing… Remember the old adage two wrongs don’t make a right. …. or two wrongs don’t make IT right…..
