“Aloha” is a more than a word for Native Hawaiians — and its elevated importance in how people approach their own lives and wellbeing is invoked in one of society’s most controversial debates. The Hawaii Supreme Court upheld that state’s restrictions on carrying guns in public, in part saying “the spirit of Aloha” informs how the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is interpreted locally.
