Indigenous music and musicians have a special place in our tribal societies. These music makers also understand it is important to share their words and sounds beyond tribal borders. This year the South by Southwest (SXSW) Festival will bring several Indigenous musicians to its stages. As these musical ambassadors prepare to share their music with a diverse audience, we bring part of this year’s Indigenous lineup to our electronic talking circle. How can sharing Indigenous music in venues across the country help our tribal nations?

Last year on Columbus Day, or Indigenous Peoples Day to some, Shane Creepingbear had his Facebook account shut down. The reason given was his name was not “authentic.” Facebook has reinstated his account but Creepingbear is not alone. Other Native Americans have come forward with stories of their accounts being shut down. While having a Facebook account shut down might seem like a minor issue, some are asking if this is a symbol of general disregard for Native America. How visible is Native America to the rest of the country? With the exception of the mascot issue, Native American issues rarely make national headlines. There are no Native American actors in leading roles on prime time television right now. And only two members of Congress are Native. Is Native America invisible to the rest of the US? How can we make ourselves more visible?

Oak Flat in the Tonto National Forest is considered a sacred, ancestral place to the San Carlos Apache but it also home to a huge copper deposit. With the passage of the 2015 National Defense Authorization Act in December, mining company Resolution Copper will swap about eight miles of land they currently own for nearly four miles of land in the Tonto National Forest including Oak Flat. The company plans to mine copper, which the Apache say will destroy land precious to the tribe. Join us as we explore the impacts the Oak Flat land swap will have on national defense and cultural practices.

Suicide has a devastating impact on individuals, families and communities. According to the Centers for Disease Control, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. Suicide rates are even higher in many Native communities there are many programs that aim to prevent suicide. But what happens when someone attempts suicide and survives? While suicide attempts are not tracked, it is estimated that around 500 thousand people visited the hospital in 2013 due to self-harm behaviors. What are the steps that should be taken to help someone after they try to kill themselves? How can friends and family support a loved one as they try to heal? And how can they prevent it from happening again?
