First Nations educator and author Glen Coulthard, a citizen of the Yellowknives Dene Nation, takes on the ideas of Indigenous identity and colonization in his new book, “Red Skin, White Masks: Rejecting the Colonial Politics of Recognition.” Coulthard examines the systems of what he calls settler colonial power in the book’s chapters. He also explores how these systems took a toll on Indigenous self-governance and rights to the land. What kind of impact has recognition as a nation had your Native life? Ojibwe historian Brenda J. Child shares part of her culture and family history in the new book, “My Grandfather’s Knocking Sticks.” It’s part memoir and part history lesson of the Native peoples of the Great Lakes region from the early 20th century. Native America Calling features the work of a Native author each month. In December 2014, we invite our listeners to learn more about the anthology “Dreaming in Indian: Contemporary Native American Voices.” Editors Lisa Charleyboy and Mary Leatherdale gathered works from artists, entertainers and community leaders in this new collection.

We will discuss this book live on Friday, December 19.

“Nation to Nation: Treaties Between the United States and American Indian Nations” is our September 2014 Book of the Month. This collection, edited by activist and author Suzan Shown Harjo (Cheyenne/HodulgeeMuscogee), covers a new exhibit that marks the 10th anniversary of the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI). The pages of the book represent a conversation about the impact treaties made the U.S. government have had on our tribal nations. How deeply rooted are treaties in to your tribe’s history? Have your own treaties been honored? Do you feel treaties have the same strength today as they did when they were first made? What can we learn about the U.S. from past agreements?
