In most cities and towns, garbage trucks drive around and haul away unsightly and stinky trash to a place no one ever sees or smells. That’s not always the case in Native America, especially in rural areas. Some communities lack solid waste infrastructure, programming and funding. This can lead to illegal dumping. How do boundaries and jurisdiction complicate things even further?  How can tribes address this issue?

The rate of Native Americans in federal prison has increased by 27 percent in the last five years, according to reporting from the Wall Street Journal. Because of the special relationship tribes have with the federal government, many crimes committed on Indian Reservations are subject to federal sentencing guidelines. This can create a dramatic difference in the sentences for the same crimes that are handed down to Native Americans. The United States Sentencing Commission created a Tribal Issues Advisory Group to look at the issue of federal sentencing in Indian Country. In this first installment of our 4-part series on prison issues in Native America, we discuss the disparities Native Americans face in federal sentencing. How does this issue impact you or your community? What is needed to create a more equitable sentencing system for Native Americans?

Having a limb amputated, whether it’s from a sudden accident or the result of illness and disease, can change a person’s life. Between physical therapy and getting fitted for prosthetic limbs, living without certain limbs can take a toll mentally, physically and financially. What happens before and after an amputation? And what are the best ways to heal after having an amputation? Tribes are excluded from the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). What should Native amputees know about their rights as a disabled person when the Americans with Disabilities Act does not apply in tribal communities?

Last month, a subsidiary of the Afognak Native Corporation fell victim to an online fraud and lost 3.8 million dollars. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has an entire department dedicated to cyber crimes, including computer invasions of individuals, businesses and governments. Some tribes are technically savvy with world class gaming systems and other economic ventures, while others are limited to basic internet and security. In this fast moving digital age, are tribal governments safe from cyber-attacks? What do tribes and their citizens need to know in order to keep their information safe?

Thursday, May 28, 2015 – Sanitation Problems In Native America

According to the Rural Community Assistance Partnership, nearly one in 20 households in Native America does not have complete indoor plumbing. In Alaska, the group estimates that 3,300 households do not have pipe water or sewer systems.  Lack of modern sanitation can cause serious health problems like pneumonia and other respiratory illnesses, as well as skin lesions. The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation issued a challenge to teams of professionals to make cost-efficient water and sewer systems for Alaska Native villages in need. How can communities make sure that everyone in Native America has their sanitation needs met? Do tribes have the resources to help tribal members get the pipe water and sewer systems?
