The Grand Canyon is considered a national treasure. It’s also sacred to many tribes. There are projects proposed to increase tourism dollars and create economic development for areas surrounding the canyon. The Grand Canyon Escalade would bring a river walk and gondola ride to the northeast corner of the canyon, located on the Navajo Nation. Supporters say the project will bring much-needed economic development. The opposition says the project will encroach on sacred areas and damage the environment. Would you take a tram ride into the Grand Canyon?
Guests:
Albert Hale (Navajo) – former president of the Navajo Nation and partner at Confluence Partners
Jason Nez (Diné) – archeologist and is with Save the Confluence
Herman Honanie (Hopi) – Chairman of the Hopi Tribe
Break music: Unity (song) Native Roots (artist) Most High (album)

Noooooooo! Stop this madness. Don’t they have any respect!
We would all love to visit but they have to draw a line.
Valerie Campbell says
The Grand Canyon is indeed Sacred Ground and not only to Native Americans. It would destroy it to be developed. Please do not allow this to happen. This is not honorable use of the Earth.
Colleen says
I would approve of the development ONLY if people could view only and NEVER be allowed out of the tram. Once people are allowed out, the littering, defacement, contamination, ldestruction begin.. Even with viewing only from a tram, something of the SACRED is diminished.
Colleen says
I might approve ONLY if viewing could be from inside a tram. A tram should never touch down. Once people are allowed out, the littering, defacement, destruction, contamination of sacred space begins. Even with viewing, something of the sacred is diminished. I would truly prefer NO commercial development.
Ernest Peyketewa says
No no gondola it is a very scared site.
David says
No!!! It would be a travesty to build a tram to allow thousands of people to encroach onto such a sacred spot on a daily basis.

I don’t see any of you out there praying every morning.. Let these people who have no jobs no income besides herding sheep have a piece of the American dream and be self sufficient instead of relying on tribal money and resources to survive.. Before this project was purposed I NEVER heard any Navajo talk about the grand canyon as a “sacred site”..let the younger generation come out of the stone age and develop the life skills needed to support their current and future families..
Amy says
It ruins the view to put in this mechanical conveyance. It should be difficult to get there, those who are most determined and dedicated will find a way that will not ugly this beautiful place up.
