The Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe in South Dakota is making strides to open the first tribal recreational marijuana resort by the end of the year. They already have several strains of marijuana plants growing in a specialized lab. Do you think recreational marijuana is a good business or a risky one for tribes to venture into? What role should tribes play in the growing efforts to legalize marijuana?

A gentleman on the air commented saying, “you always hear of drunk drivers killing people. You never hear of people high on Marijuana killing people.”
My name is Lehi Jessop. I am a police officer and want to caution the common idea that marijuana will not affect drivers. Although drunk drivers cause car crashes and even fatalities more often than perhsps drivers high on Marijuana. However, there are multiple prosecuted cases where drivers have gone to prison for causing crashes/fatalities while high on Marijuana.
The comments on this topic given on the air were all very good pro and con. Regardless, I’ve come to find a common misconception that marijuana will not affect a motorists’ cognitive & motor skills, which is simply not true. Marijuana, if used legally, should be treated like any other drug with caution to its power in indulgence. Marijuana is highly addictive and does dumb the mind down while under the influence. So for people to think this drug cannot be harmful in any way are highly deceived. Use caution.
Thank you.
Lehi Jessop.

I respect your opinion Lehi but statistics show the opposite. Not only are most cannabis users more cautious drivers , but the whole idea that it “dumbs down the mind” us utterly false. You perhaps are talking about people who abuse the plant and/or use it with alcohol vs use it sparingly or to help themselves and doctor an illness be it PTSD, cancer, epilpesy or even just stress.
Google “Cannabis CEO’s” and see how many people running successful corporations use cannabis, and are not remotely “dumbed down”. We must get away from this stoner mentality and see that it is a medicine that can assist our community way beyond economic development. Lets talk about healing centers and helping sick people.
I dont notice you mentioning the meth or prescription drugs which kill 100,000+ people annually. Cannabis is the new exit therapy for addiction you will be hearing more and more about its marvelous gifts. Don’t blame the plant because of human abuse. Coffee is more addictive than cannabis, and is an addiction to speed. Education is critical. Blessings to you, I realize there are no simple solutions to the issues in our community.
