The Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) is responsible for 183 elementary and secondary schools. In 2013, US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and Secretary of the Interior, Sally Jewell, appointed a study group to “diagnose the causes of too common academic failure in BIE-funded schools.” Some BIE schools struggle academically and a recent report from the federal government points out major health and safety concerns due to poor building conditions. On this episode of Native America Calling, we look at proposed changes that aim to improve BIE schools.

I would like to thank Dr. Russell for his comments to my statements, I have been searching for some guidance as to how to alleviate the tension and mistrust at our school. Like you say, I am not being herard nor are any of the other people in my working environment. I am currently suspended from work due to talking of my concerns over the radio, and may be terminated next week for it. I have been pushing to resolve issues to no avail, I will request for your suggested solutions to be implemented. Miigwech. bon
