Lawmakers in Wisconsin propose opening up protected effigy mounds to the possibility of mining and other development. The mounds are considered sacred by the Ho-Chunk and many other tribes. The bill would allow excavation unless there’s evidence of human remains. Hundreds of protesters showed up at the state Capitol to help persuade legislators to put the brakes on the Wisconsin Landowner Rights Act for now. The fight comes down to protecting sacred places or maximizing private property rights. Who do you think should control the land?
Guests:
David Greendeer (Ho-Chunk) – District 2 Legislator for the Ho-chunk Nation
Boye Ladd (Ho-Chunk and Zuni) -Cultural Advisor
Break music: Soar (song) Injunuity (artist) Spirits (album)

Leave The Sacred Burial Grounds Alone!!! It would be like digging up the Cemetaries of Our Military that gave their LIVES For Us!!! Quit thinking of $$$$$$$$$$&&&&&!!
Quit Destroying America And Have Some Respect!!! The Real Picture Of Our Forefathers treating the Native Americans, which was NOT portrayed in school…history…when coming to America!!!! We had/have Native Americans that served in the wars (and others)….Show Some Respect!!!!!!!!
Jeanine says
yes please show your respect
Jody says
Who should “Control” the land? I don’t think that should be up for question. They are sacred! People can make their money elsewhere! As many have said, “You wouldn’t dig up any other gravesites to make money, would you?!”
Rhonda Robles says
The sacred mounds should be protected for all people. This is a typical and world wide struggle for native people and private interests who look to profits versus respect and preservation of history. Whether human remains are “discovered” the Ancestors and native history are there. Yes native brothers, sisters and friends fight on. My mother was an activist and she always said “Never give up”. Just by standing up you are a positive role model to the younger ones and a winner. I pray for your success.

How can Wisconsin dictate what happens in Iowa?
Tom says
They are talking about effigy mounds, which are located in several states. They are not referring to “Effigy Mounds” in NE Iowa.
AJ says
This one is perplexing because the mounds are in Iowa unless they have some on the other side of the river. We need to have more information.

I ask the same thing Its in Iowa . Wisc. should have no say
Bonnie Roe says
Agree….I don’t quite understand what Wisconsin has to do with the Effigy Mounds National Park here in Iowa.
JB says
The article isn’t talking about the park in Iowa. It’s talking about burial mounds in Wisconsin.
Kim says
There are 1000s of Indian mounds all over the country, not just in Iowa. Iowans just have a large concentration of them in a small area, which is mostly protected as a State Park.
erika says
Because the effigy mounds are in wisc right on the border been there it’s beautiful no reason to tear it up for some money making scheme
ted sojka says
Would Scott Walker let anyone do a dig at his family cemetery? How can he say it is OK to dig in the sacred places of other people, first nation, or anyone else?
Native Earthworks Preservation/ Iowa
RLM says
Yes, for the right amount of money I think Scott Walker would dig up his family’s cemetery.
Heather says
Disgraceful! Not only are the mounds a sacred place for many Native people, but a historically significant area that needs to be protected for future generations! The fact that they are letting greed get to them is absolutely shameful.
Jayneen says
It is Historical and Sacred! Keep your hands off it’
Donald says
I am all about land owner rights but only an idiot would destroy something so important to so many.
jennifer henderson says
amen brother !!!!
Lee Ann says
I completely agree. Land owners rights are important, but something so beautiful should be left alone. This should be enjoyed by all and saved for future generations to enjoy.
Tangy says
What is wrong with people! Please let them rest in peace! All of our history needs to be left alone. I am ashamed that so many people want to erase America’s history. You don’t see other countries doing this!
Kathie Edge says
Leave them alone
Kim says
Yes what is wrong with people it’s called Greed please respect the Ho Chunk nation and its people
Googy says
There are mounds on the Wisconsin side of the river, My sister owned property on one of the bluffs and there are mounds on that property.
Amanda says
NO!!!!! I’m so tired of this. In Hawaii, in Wisconsin, everywhere.
Is there a petition? I will sign and share if so.
If not, let me know, if I have the energy for it and it is aligned for me to do, I will start one myself.
jazzyjjm says
Burial mounds in the shape of an animal or bird are called effigy mounds. This article does NOT talk about the national park named Effigy Mounds, which is located in Iowa. Regardless, the mounds need to be left alone. We have no right to mess with them, even if we think we own the land on which they are located.
jennifer henderson says
give it back to whom it belongs to;…….. the Native Americans !! We might learn something from them!!
Holly says
I go past the Effigy Mounds on the Iowa side of the river about twice or 3 times a week when I drive over the bridge to Prairie Du Chien Wis. There is always a large amount of cars in the parking lot and you have to be careful rounding the curve right before you get to the mounds parking lot entry….as people are driving slow looking to find the driveway into and the visitors building that is there. I see lots of family’s all over the lot from the first of spring way until after kids go back to school. This is history and these mounds are teaching the history of this land. Anyone who wants to destroy any of the mounds are just full of greed. I am sure the Effigy mounds pay for themselves with the visitors rates to go in, but some may not be so visited in some states who do not view them as important. We are a country of greed and throw away…including our history. Leave the mounds alone!!
Kimmmy says
If anyone starts any kind of petition let me know I will sign and I know a lot of others who will to
Teresa H says
Effigy Mounds should remain protected. Nobody wants their loved ones disturbed once they’re in their final resting place, including land developers. Hasn’t the Government disrespected American Indians too much already? Do not continue this pattern by mining and developing on their sacred burial grounds.
We have a huge country. Why must another half vacant strip mall go up there or more high density housing when there are more than enough vacancies for people to live in.
Diane Fowler says
Haven’t we taken enough away from the Native American people. This is a sacred place and should not be destroyed. We wouldn’t do this to any other burial ground.
